Despite the global pandemic that restricted travel and gatherings in 2020, visitors to Bridgewater Marina continued to make waves with our annual “Feed the Fish for Make-A-Wish" fundraiser.

In 2020, we donated $19,978!

While not the numbers we've seen in the past, we couldn't me more thrilled to make this donation to Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia. And it's all thanks to you!

Since starting the initiative four years ago, our amazing patrons have generated more than $97,000 for the Richmond-based nonprofit that grants life-changing wishes for children in Virginia facing critical illness.

How does Make-A-Wish benefit when you feed the fish at Bridgewater?

It's simple. You come to the marina, purchase a bag of popcorn for $1 to toss to those big, hungry carp that gather year-round at our docks. Then we donate 100% of the proceeds!

Caroline Browell, Director of Marketing and Communications for Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia, said the challenges of the past year have made the commitment of community supporters even more valuable.

“Wishes create hope for children battling critical illnesses and give them a piece of their childhood back, providing the strength needed to continue their battles for health,” Browell said. “We are honored by Bridgewater Marina’s continued commitment to granting life-changing wishes for children in Virginia, and are proud to be their partner for their Feed The Fish for Make-A-Wish campaign.”

Browell said the average wish costs $10,000 so Bridgewater Marina’s donation equates to two wishes for children in Virginia facing critical illnesses. Examples include meeting celebrities, working a dream job and visiting a desired destination such as Chicago or New York ... or maybe even Smith Mountain Lake!

What's our goal for 2021 Feed the Fish for Make-A-Wish?

As many of you know, Make-A-Wish very near and dear to my heart, and the team and I can't thank you enough for continuing to support this event. The Smith Mountain Lake community is the best!

Our goal for 2021 is get back to pre-pandemic levels and raise $30,000!

Visit the Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia website to find out more about their inspiring work, and be sure to follow them on Facebook.
